| Samokov (SEE ON MAP) is situated 30 miles away from Sofia - the capital of Bulgaria. It is situated in a kettle between the mountains Rila and Vitosha.Due to the suitable winter sports conditions, Samokov, together with the nearby resort Borovets, is a major tourist centre.
The area is surrounded by the pine tree forests of the National Rila Park, the area is an ideal place to relax or take a holiday.Some other resorts and attractions close to Samokov include – Govedarci,Borovets, the biggest winter resort in Bulgaria, a tourist mountain center in Maliovic, Belchin Baths - a mineral balneological center, and the Iskar reservoir.
During the summer it is nice to have a walk in the fresh cool Rila pine-trees forests and during the winter months it is a pleasure to ski on the crisp white ski slopes. Fans of walking and eco tourism could easily explore the beauty in and around Govedarci with the help of an experienced guide. There are also excellent facilities for mountain biking and cycling. The Ecotourism Association has so far created 150 km of walking and cycling paths in the area, sponsored by the Bulgarian Ministry of Environmental and Waters.
